Country White Bread

Bread can be expensive to buy and if you and your family eat a lot of it, you should try to make your own. It is very easy to make with very little specialty cookware and with just a few ingredients you probably have on hand. Bread also freezes very well and can be left in the freezer for up to 3 months. Just let it come to room temperature on the counter before using.

Makes 1 Loaf

  • 1 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/3 cup shortening (any flavor but butter is nice)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 cups AP or bread flour [/gn_box]

Pour the lukewarm water into a small bowl, sprinkle the yeast on top and set aside for 5 – 7 minutes until frothy on top.  Bring ½ cup water to a boil and remove from heat.  Add shortening and let sit until melted and the water has reached lukewarm.  Once the shortening mixture has cooled, add the egg, sugar, salt and 1 cup of flour.  Pour in the yeast mixture.  Add the additional flour and place dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 7 minutes or until smooth and elastic.  Place dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and place in a warm area until double in size, about 1 hour.  When double in size, punch down the dough and place on a floured surface – shape into a loaf and let rise in the lightly greased loaf pan for 40 minutes.  While the bread is rising, preheat the oven to 350 F.  Once the bread has risen, bake at 350 F for 40 minutes. [/gn_box]
